Portugal Country Flag

Portugal Country Flag

Vessels sailing under the Portugal Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The Portugal Country Flag is represented by a green and red background, the green filling the hoist, or left side of the flag to 2/5 the distance to the fly, or right side. The official Portugal Coat Of Arms resides centered at the confluence of the green and red colors, offset by 2/5 toward the hoist side of the flag. The Coat Of Arms consists of a receded depiction of an armillary sphere, a navigational instrument used for naval exploration. Naval dominance provided Portugal with the power to form a formidable colonial empire, and the depiction pays tribute to Prince Henry the Navigator, who initiated this era of discovery. Over the depiction, lays a series of shields. The largest is red, with seven castles arranged within it's border. Incorporated inside the red shield, a white shield holds five blue shields, each bearing a white dot, These blue shields are arranged in the form of a cross. The Portugal Country Flag was officially adopted in 1911. It is designated to hold a proportional ratio of 2:3, height to length, respectively.
