An Introduction to Marine Materials and Structures: For Engineering Students and Practicing Engineers
SNAME is pleased to announce the release for publication of its first book in its new undergraduate textbook series. An Introduction to Marine Materials and Structures: For Engineering Students and Practicing Engineers, was written to fill the need for an introductory textbook focused on the materials and analysis methods used in the maritime environment. From the back cover, the objective and scope of the textbook are summarized as:
Starting in ancient times with hollowed out log canoes and continuing today with carbon fiber composite hydrofoils and sustainable materials, the relationship between materials and structural design in the marine industry is of complementary necessity. Without a basic understanding of materials and fabrication, an engineer will be challenged to develop an acceptable structural design. Similarly, without a fundamental understanding of analysis methods and structural design approaches, an engineer will find it hard to select appropriate materials. In this first-of-its-kind approach, two widely experienced professors present an introductory book that combines marine materials and structural design for marine structures. Intended as an undergraduate text suitable for semester-long courses in materials science for engineers and marine/ship structural design, this book will also be a valuable reference for practicing engineers and for those engineers moving into the marine industry.
